Top Flight swept the board at
the trophy presentation ceremonies for both the Winchester and Southampton
Districts. Last season we were overall League Champions of the Southampton
League, the Winchester Mixed League and the Winchester Mens League. We also
won Southampton Division 1, Winchester Mixed Division 2A and Winchester Mixed
Division 3A! Well done to all who contributed to this success. |
Fastest Sport?
Badminton
is one the world's fastest racket sports, requiring quick reflexes and superb
conditioning. In a badminton smash, the
shuttlecock has been timed at speeds over 200 m.p.h. in top international
competition.

Don’t forget that you can
keep an eye on the progress of your team by checking the league tables on the
following websites:
Winchester League: http://www.wdba.freeserve.co.uk/
Southampton League: http://www.hants.gov.uk/sdba/
Everyone
Please note
that match times are as follows:
|
WEDNESDAYS start time 7.20pm
PROMPT, 2 courts (one court to 10pm, the other to 10.40pm SUNDAYS (against non- Top Flight teams) start
time 5.20pm PROMPT, running on into club night if necessary SUNDAYS, MATCHES BETWEEN TOP FLIGHT TEAMS: start time 6pm PROMPT, running on into club night. |
It’s really, really
important that we get matches started on time so that they finish in time, so
please make every effort to be at Chamberlayne in good time so that you can
step on court as soon as the courts are free. If you expect to be late for some reason, please let your
captain know so they don’t think you’ve just forgotten about the match!
To help out your captains, please
also write down the scores on the match sheet as soon as you come off court.
Please also bring your match fee (amount to be notified later!) to every match
and give it to your captain.
Captains:
Please telephone the opposition’s
match secretary (see Ann or Hazel for details) about a week or so before each
match, to confirm the details of the match.
This is really important, to make sure that no one turns up at the wrong
time/ place/ date!
Please try to arrive for home
matches in good time, so that you can encourage (by force, if necessary!!) your
team to get on court as soon as the courts are free. We really need to get matches started promptly so that they
finish before we lose the courts.
Opposing teams have been asked to arrive at 5.15pm (Sundays) and 7.15pm
(Wednesdays).
For home matches, please make sure
that you’ve got shuttles from Chris for the match (new and knockers) a few days
beforehand.
Make sure you and your team write
down all the scores during the match – don’t leave it until the end. Please also keep a copy of each match sheet,
however rough, so that you and the other captains can check how many times
people have played in which team, if necessary.
Try to send the match sheets off to
the League secretaries as soon as possible.
Winchester match sheets can be emailed if you wish – a blank match sheet
is on the Winchester and District website (http://www.wdba.freeserve.co.uk/)
Please collect all the shuttles at
the end of the match and keep the leftovers for your next match.
Try to collect all match fees at
each match, and then pay them over to Chris next time you see him.
....... and on a lighter note, EVERYONE! – please spread the word,
both to your opposition in matches and to your friends, about the TOP FLIGHT
NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY. Team captains
will have loads of flyers to dish out to anyone and everyone!! Hazel

Personal Column
The Top Flight Newsletter promotes social activities as well
as badminton and therefore will commence a Relationships Column', starting from
the next newsletter. However, the
following have been rushed through the printing procedure in this edition, as emergency
cases;
Wanted:
MALE seeks FEMALE
Tall, slim, good-looking, left-handed male seeks lady for
badminton-related activities once weekly, with other options available. Must have own badminton racquet, but other
equipment / tackle could be shared.
MALE seeks MALE
Tall, slim, good-looking, left-handed male seeks gentleman
for fun-related activities, possibly friendship. An interest in bassoon playing essential. I can teach you to play
on my instrument - what can you teach me?
MALE seeks BISEXUAL
Tall, slim, good-looking, left-handed male seeks that very
special person who can share my lifelong passion for garden gnomes. Ann V

Alan doesn't really work at IBM - our special
photographer caught him fish-handed in Carnaby Street. See 'Wanted' section -
this is how Alan pulls, and as the photo clearly shows, with a measure of
success!
Don't worry, Alan, that we all
know(me) about your little secret. Counselling is available for this sort of
thing.
Best entry wins top prize - a snog from Gnome A,
but, take care - you never know what has just been in his mouth). The editorial team have a few suggestions to
start you off...
·
Here's a fishy tale.
·
"Gnome-ing me,
gnome-ing you..........."
·
Which one's the gnome?
·
"Chips with your
fish, darling?"
·
In the past, men have
been known to kiss frogs in an attempt to get their princess.....but Alan likes
to do things differently.
·
Alan's codpiece?
·
Delia has competition -
the new buzz phrase in the world of cookery is 'doing an Alan'.
·
Alan knew that Sushi
consists of raw fish, but didn't realise that the fish had to be dead.
